Japan On Fire 19: Sabu – Monday

jof19

Originally recorded as one long Japan On Fire 19, it is now re-edited into a shorter episode and second half of the long recording will feature in Japan On Fire 20.

This is part 2 of our series on director Sabu after covering his first two movies Dangan Runner and Postman Blues in episode 18 of Japan On Fire. His characters ran and rode on bikes amidst droll, quirky and absurd humour as well as drama in the first two and not a lot changes as we look at Monday from 2000. Does Sabu still evolve though? With Kenny B and VCinema‘s Coffin Jon.

Running Times:
00m 00s – Intro/Recap of Sabu bio and episode one
25ms 45s – Current Japanese cinema talk (part 1)
40m 20s – Monday review

Podcast On Fire 187: Face/Off & Hong Kong 1941

pof187

Podcast On Fire may focus on the known and the big guns out of Hong Kong cinema, classics or not, but no one’s demanding the programming to be strict or they’ll tune out so for this episode, based on the suggestion of our guest, we switch it up and head to part of the Hollywood filmography of a Hong Kong director. Namely John Woo and his third outing in America from 1997 called Face/Off. For our second review, we’re following among other things an actor on top of his game but not quite ready to be embraced by the public. Still, didn’t stop awards juries from giving Chow Yun-fat accolades for his performance in Leung Po-chih’s 1984 war drama Hong Kong 1941. With Kenny B and special guest Dr. Stan Glick.

Japan On Fire 18: Sabu – Dangan Runner & Postman Blues

jof18

We are starting a new series on a particular figure out of Japanese cinema. I don’t know of many so I pick the ones I know and years ago I was recommended checking out the work of Sabu. I responded well, put down the fandom but now that there is a podcast series on Japanese cinema I’m involved in, it’s a good op to pick up where I left off/revisit what I liked in the first place. That is to setup that for a couple of episodes we’ll be talking of director Sabu and for this episode his first two movies: Dangan Runner from 1996 and Postman Blues from 1997. With me Kenny B and VCinema‘s Coffin Jon.

Running Times:
00m 00s – Intro/Sabu bio/discussion
43ms 37s – Dangan Runner review
67m 50s – Shinichi Tsutsumi bio/discussion
86m 20s – Postman Blues review

This Week In Sleaze 28: Tightie Whitie Theatre – Laboratory Of The Devil & A Narrow Escape

twis28

Let’s talk some shameless war crime exploitation, Men Behind The Sun-sploitation if you will. After Mou Tun-fei did his research and a in your face but valid examination of the human experimentation by the Japanese during World War II, exploitation cash ins appeared that resulted in 2 semi related sequels: Laboratory Of The Devil and A Narrow Escape by otherwise ninjasploitation/cut and paste sploitation director Godfrey Ho. Sleazy K and The Great Lord Joshua Regal sit down for examination of watered down cash grabs.

Hard Revenge Milly Bloody Battle (2009)

Country: Japan
Genre: Action/Gore
Cast: Miki Mizuno, Mitsuki Koga, Nao Nagasawa

Hard Revenge Milly Bloody Battle or HRM2 as I shall call it from herein, is a sequel to HRM1 as you can guess. The basic premise is someone who loved the protaganist from HRM1 is out for revenge and on top of that Milly is helping another young woman (whom in my opinion is badly dressed for battle) get revenge. It all helps dig in the mantra of revenging your loved ones will create an endless cycle of revenge. Read More

Hard Revenge Milly (2008)

Country: Japan
Genre: Action/Gore
Cast: Miki Mizuno, Tetsuya Nakamura, Hiroshi Ohguchi

Hard Revenge Milly is yet another over the top Japanese gore flick. This one coming from the cine-asia label made me so curious about what this would be like.

Like most films of this genre this is short (runs in at mere 40 minutes). But don’t be turned off it simply means you get a lot less faffing about and more action. Because let’s face it the non action pieces from these films aren’t the most exciting and this film didn’t have the budget of Tokyo Gore Police or Machine Girl so they put all the energy into the main part. Rain Fall (2009)

Country: Japan/Australia

Rain Fall is your typical American action thriller, only it isn’t. It’s set entirely in Japan and most of the cast are Japanese too. It follows CIA hitman John Rain (Kippei Shiina) trying to protect the daughter of his last target from various shady types. Read More
