Podcast On Fire 192: Gambling Season – God of Gamblers & God Of Gamblers’ Return

pof192

Welcome to this retrospective of part of the God Of Gamblers series, its sequels and spin off’s. Hugely popular real life occupation for Hong Kong people and transferred to the screen as well, by the man who arugably did it the best while also adhering to comedy and action tradition of the golden period of Hong Kong cinema of the 80s and 90s. His name is Wong Jing and struck box office gold in 1989 with God Of Gamblers starring superstar Chow Yun-fat in his iconic role of Do San, the God of Gamblers, Andy Lau and Joey Wong. A few Stephen Chow vehicles in the same vein were made around this time and subsequently but in 1994 the team of Chow and Wong Jing got together for God Of Gamblers’ Return and those are the two movies we picked for episode one out of three in this series dubbed Gambling Season. With Kenny B and special guest and hos of the East Screen West Screen podcast, Paul Fox.

Podcast On Fire 187: Face/Off & Hong Kong 1941

pof187

Podcast On Fire may focus on the known and the big guns out of Hong Kong cinema, classics or not, but no one’s demanding the programming to be strict or they’ll tune out so for this episode, based on the suggestion of our guest, we switch it up and head to part of the Hollywood filmography of a Hong Kong director. Namely John Woo and his third outing in America from 1997 called Face/Off. For our second review, we’re following among other things an actor on top of his game but not quite ready to be embraced by the public. Still, didn’t stop awards juries from giving Chow Yun-fat accolades for his performance in Leung Po-chih’s 1984 war drama Hong Kong 1941. With Kenny B and special guest Dr. Stan Glick.

Podcast On Fire 181: Mad Monkey Kung Fu & Wild Search

pof181

Let’s take a look at THE Shaw Brothers director that made kung fu comedy great when they attempted to respond to that booming trend. Namely Lau Kar-leung and his Mad Monkey Kung Fu from 1979. Also in this episode, a look at when a Hong Kong director everybody cried for when Quentin Tarantino “took” his movie away from him but when he took someone elses…template himself. We didn’t mind it for Reservoir Dogs vs Ringo Lam’s City On Fire and sure as hell didn’t when Lam made his own take on the Harrison Ford movie Witness in the form of Wild Search from 1989. With Kenny B and Phil G who also recaps his trip to China and meeting Jackie Chan.
