Podcast On Fire 192: Gambling Season – God of Gamblers & God Of Gamblers’ Return

pof192

Welcome to this retrospective of part of the God Of Gamblers series, its sequels and spin off’s. Hugely popular real life occupation for Hong Kong people and transferred to the screen as well, by the man who arugably did it the best while also adhering to comedy and action tradition of the golden period of Hong Kong cinema of the 80s and 90s. His name is Wong Jing and struck box office gold in 1989 with God Of Gamblers starring superstar Chow Yun-fat in his iconic role of Do San, the God of Gamblers, Andy Lau and Joey Wong. A few Stephen Chow vehicles in the same vein were made around this time and subsequently but in 1994 the team of Chow and Wong Jing got together for God Of Gamblers’ Return and those are the two movies we picked for episode one out of three in this series dubbed Gambling Season. With Kenny B and special guest and hos of the East Screen West Screen podcast, Paul Fox.

Podcast On Fire 189: The Last Blood & Pantyhose Hero

pof189

Alan Tam double bill, people! Normally an actor I detest and for part of this episode I will continue doing that but no doubt, Tam-ster, Tam-boy, Tammi was part of a thriving Hong Kong cinema and put in various vehicles requring a lot out of him. Among other things action and for part of this evening, that admiration will be put forth. We first look at Wong Jing’s gun-fu, gunplay, Singapore set The Last Blood from 1991 and in the second half we discuss Sammo Hung’s politically incorrect action-comedy Pantyhose Hero. With Kenny B and Phil G.

Podcast On Fire 184: The Dynasty Report – Overheard 3, Z Storm & The Great Hypnotist

01

Let’s get experimental! Seeing as I enjoy the company of my co-host so much and he’s got an advantage of following current Hong Kong cinema due to being IN Hong Kong (and sits on a wealth of knowledge about its current status, its players), I thought this episode would serve as an experiment, a test run of me, Kenny B, interviewing my guest about some of the latest releases. Meaning I haven’t had a chance to see, I couldn’t see nor wanted to see possibly but hey, at least the spotlight is away from me for once and onto Paul Fox. Who brings us his Hong Kong cinema June and July picks in the form of Overheard 3, Z Storm and The Great Hypnotist. Michael Wong gets mentioned many times.

Podcast On Fire 167: Running On Karma & Flirting Scholar

pof167

In this episode we all find out if we’re gonna die soon by pumping iron and watching each other’s karma auras.  And we laugh. It’s easy to draw the conclusion therefore that we’re covering 2003’s Running On Karma by Johnnie To & Wai Ka-fai and the Stephen Chow box office smash Flirting Scholar by Lee Lik-chi. Kenny B and Tom K-W are at hand to discuss with returning co-host Hong Kong Dave!

Podcast On Fire 162: As Tears Go By & Mad Detective

pof162

Mixing vintage Hong Kong cinema of the recognizeable kind rather than us going for obscure only has been our tac this year but the programmer of this episode Dr. Lam brings Kenny B and Tom K-W a slice of current too. First up is our review of Wong Kar-wai’s debut movie, the triad-romance As Tears Go By from 1988 and second is Lau Ching-wan’s welcome back party into the fold of Milkyway Image in the form of Johnnie To’s and Wai Ka-fai’s Mad Detective.

Ken’s note. Audio gets a little low on my end at points for some reason. Sorry about that.

Podcast On Fire 154: A Moment Of Romance & Bullet In The Head

postimage

Remember the summer of 1990 when two action-drama and romance classics came out and that you were left devastated after each one? If you did (and even if you didn’t), here’s your chance to relive some of that through Kenny B’s and Tom K-W’s discussion on Benny Chan’s A Moment Of Romance and John Woo’s Bullet In The Head. Dr. Lam is also at hand, providing two separately recorded reviews and check out his show specific doodles in the show links! Pardon the audio quality of these two segments.

Podcast On Fire Network Bonus Episode 9: Members Only Archive Dusted #1

podcast10

Bringing the old forum exclusive Members Only section to the bonus episodes, for this first look into its archive, we go back to Podcast On Fire 10 and the additional 20 minutes Stoo, Kenny B and Mike Banner cut from the main show. Among other things contained in these bits is random banter, friendly ribbing containing topics such as who’s the better Twin out of Charlene Choi and Gillian Chung, does Ken have any fan website and we look at the still amazing you tube clip of Andy Lau leaping off stage to aid a fan who’s being roughed up by security guards.
