Commentary On Fire 13: Rouge

cof14

It seems based on the podcast-crew and time we have at our disposal that Commentary On Fire is now a once a year endeavour and this time we take matters a bit more seriously. It’s the challenge to do the commentary straight-faced but fun and most importantly INFO makes its way into the track for Stanley Kwan’s 1988 supernatural romance Rouge, starring Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung. With Kenny B and Tom K-W.

For those without the dvd, you can find the commentary timed to video, in 5 parts, here.

Podcast On Fire 184: The Dynasty Report – Overheard 3, Z Storm & The Great Hypnotist

01

Let’s get experimental! Seeing as I enjoy the company of my co-host so much and he’s got an advantage of following current Hong Kong cinema due to being IN Hong Kong (and sits on a wealth of knowledge about its current status, its players), I thought this episode would serve as an experiment, a test run of me, Kenny B, interviewing my guest about some of the latest releases. Meaning I haven’t had a chance to see, I couldn’t see nor wanted to see possibly but hey, at least the spotlight is away from me for once and onto Paul Fox. Who brings us his Hong Kong cinema June and July picks in the form of Overheard 3, Z Storm and The Great Hypnotist. Michael Wong gets mentioned many times.

Podcast On Fire 183: Encounter Of The Spooky Kind & A Better Tomorrow II

pof183

We take a look at when the combo of martial arts, horror and the supernatural clicked, the genre bender if you will in the form of Sammo Hung’s Encounter Of The Spooky Kind from 1980 as well as the sequel to one of the most iconic Hong Kong action pictures of all time, John Woo’s A Better Tomorrow II. With Kenny B and Tom K-W.

This Week In Sleaze 30: Tightie Whitie Theatre – Intimate Confessions Of A Chinese Courtesan & Lust For Love Of A Chinese Courtesan

twis30

Let’s talk some high class fucking! Meaning we turn to the more explicit, sleazier side of the big studio Shaw Brothers but they were not all about the kung fu and swordplay. Oh, from The Knight Of Knights (covered on This Week In Sleaze 5) and onwards, erotica trickled its way into these classy, gorgeous period epics that could also feature swordplay and gore. That’s where we find Intimate Confessions Of A Chinese Courtesan from director Chor Yuen. We’ll be talking of that as well as the Chor Yuen directed remake from 1984 called Lust For Love Of A Chinese Courtesan.
