Taiwan Noir 17: Requital & Hunting List

tn17

Taiwanese heroic gore-shed time and welcome gain to the wonderful world of Taiwan movie buff and expert at putting entire scenes or entire movies in his movies: Chu Yen-ping. This episode, we talk of him dipping his toe into State Of Grace while also remaking it nearly fully and that work comes in the form of 1992’s Requital and 1994’s Hunting List.

Taiwan Noir 16: Night Orchid & The Greatest Plot

tn16

Because we had fun discussing colourful Wuxia pian last time (when The Ghost Hill was reviewed), we jump ahead a decade to Night Orchid by Chang Peng-yi, starring Adam Cheng and Brigitte Lin. Memorable color for the genre? We’ll see. Also, we get very sparse feedback regardless of the show on the network but when a listener request is put forth towards Taiwan Noir… a specialized, niche show, we listen. Andrew in California wrote in and told us of a movie that kind of scared him as a child. Through surreal scenes, spooky sound design, eerie music but largely, we’re also dealing with a kung fu movie here with hopefully, because it is called that, The Greatest Plot.

Taiwan Noir 15: The Ghost Hill & The Fly Dragon Mountain

tn15

It’s time Taiwan Noir took a step back to Taiwan cinema swordplay or Wuxia pian. They had some juice, some fuel that could stack up with what Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest were doing despite being the little kid in terms of size of industry and maybe even means. So Kenny B and Todd Stadtman therefore talk Ting Shan-hsi’s The Ghost Hill and Chen Hung-min’s The Fly Dragon Mountain for this episode.

Taiwan Noir 13: Devil Returns & Kill For Love

taiwannoir13

It’s important to sometime note that part of the selection process for these episodes are about detailing my (Kenny B that is) own journey through this era of Taiwanese movies, mainly late 70s, early 80s. It’s about the disocvery of directors, performers, movies, classic scenes, iconic moments and about trying to explain my comfort factor watching these movies, moments and performers. That means even the stinkers and the mediocrity deserves a voice. That is our long winded way of saying welcome to Taiwan Noir 13 on Richard Chen’s Devil Returns and Kill For Love with Kenny B and  Tood Stadtman.

Taiwan Noir 12: The Ghostly Face & Little Hero

taiwannoir12

We’re dudes, we love the ladies but we’re also dudes into Hong Kong and Taiwanese cinema and the KICKASS ladies. The ones that could probably take your head off if you don’t behave. Including Polly Shang Kwan, the star of BOTH of the movies we picked for this Taiwan Noir: 1973’s The Ghostly Face and Little Hero from 1978. One of them requires some weed or will make you feel like you smoked up beforehand. You’ll know which once we get to it. Taiwan reefer madness await you with Kenny B and Todd Stadtman.

Taiwan Noir 11: Virago & The Anger

tn11

Wishing to cover the following movies anyway but now that we’re stumbling upon same actors and filmmakers again and again, the work needed to get these shows done gets reduced ever so slightly because tonight’s focus on actress Elsa Yeung and director Richard Chen means the little there is to say of them biography wise has been done. So we won’t repeat the little we know and dig as we cover 1981’s Virago (IFD’s re-title of the 1981 actioner was the more commonly known title Deadly Silver Angels) starring Elsa training women in bikinis to stab the f*ck out of men and The Anger, the Lu Hsiao-fen thriller that was the basis for the IFD cut and paste movie Inferno Thunderbolt by Godfrey Ho.

Note that the first half was recorded but lost and re-recorded under different conditions. Hence the different halves sounding somewhat different in quality. /Ken
