Podcast On Fire 198: The Dragon Family & Casino Raiders

pof198

During this episode, we reivew another duo of Alan Tam flicks and see if we’re willing spokespersons for Team Tam this time around. They come in the form of Lau Kar-wing’s 1988 gangster actioner The Dragon Family starring everyone and Alan Tam. And in the second half we take a look at a movie that many forget when talking the late 80s gambling genre in Hong Kong: Wong Jing and Jimmy Heung’s Casino Raiders from 1989.

Podcast On Fire 181: Mad Monkey Kung Fu & Wild Search

pof181

Let’s take a look at THE Shaw Brothers director that made kung fu comedy great when they attempted to respond to that booming trend. Namely Lau Kar-leung and his Mad Monkey Kung Fu from 1979. Also in this episode, a look at when a Hong Kong director everybody cried for when Quentin Tarantino “took” his movie away from him but when he took someone elses…template himself. We didn’t mind it for Reservoir Dogs vs Ringo Lam’s City On Fire and sure as hell didn’t when Lam made his own take on the Harrison Ford movie Witness in the form of Wild Search from 1989. With Kenny B and Phil G who also recaps his trip to China and meeting Jackie Chan.

Podcast On Fire 180: Disciples Of Shaolin & The Bare-Footed Kid

pof180

There’s always moans and groans whenever remakes are announced and maybe there was in the early 90s as well when The Bare-Footed Kid was announced for remake. The original 1975 Shaw Brothers classic by Chang Cheh was getting an upgrade for modern audiences, this time helmed by Johnnie To but still at Shaw Brothers and starring singer/actor Aaron Kwok. So we thought we’d take this op to discuss both, maybe not make it into a vs match but comparisons are inevitable when Kenny B and our resident Shaw Brothers afficionado Mike Maley discuss both.

Podcast On Fire 178: King Boxer & The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter

pof178

It’s a tribute to those who died this episode, some way before this episode was even recorded, some fairly recently. And we come at this with a Shaw Brothers tint as we will discuss two of the most enduring martial arts classics in the form of King Boxer directed by Jeng Cheong-woh from 1972 and Lau Kar-leung’s The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter from 1984. With Kenny B and special guest host Mike Maley, discussing the impact and lives of the movies and players.

Cast From The Past: Podcast On Fire 12 – The Lau Kar Leung Lovefest

podcast12

After the sad news this week about legendary filmmaker and martial artist Lau Kar-leung passing away, we thought it would be fitting that the next Cast From The Past (a series of shows lost from our iTunes feed and website) would be this one from 2008 featuring Kenny B, Stoo with a throat infection, Mike Banner and special guest and Lau Kar-leung fan Mike Maley. Amidst praise for the late Pops, the crew also tears Kung Pow: Enter The Fist a new one, talk about fighting Westerners in Hong Kong films and if Maggie Q is an actual talent or not.
