The Director’s Series 12: Kirk Wong – Taking Manhattan & Crime Story

tds12

He went abroad, to New York specifically to broaden his take on action (although it took 4 years between Gunmen and his next movie) and went into business with Jackie Chan for high profile action with the star taken down a notch and asked to act. Plus not so loving clashes, as opposed to the story on Gunmen, with said star. This is The Director’s Series on Kirk Wong’s Taking Manhattan and Crime Story.

The Director’s Series 11: Kirk Wong – True Colours & Gunmen

tds11

Past the weirder more experimental side of Kirk Wong, 1986’s True Colours and 1988’s Gunmen represents something more traditional: The brotherhood, romance, gunplay mashup and in the case of the latter, a low budget period effort in the vein of Untouchables but also in the vein of violent action and firey mayhem with a detailed, loving clash between producer and director.

The Director’s Series 10: Kirk Wong – Flash Future Kung Fu

tds10

A good director’s output could/should come off as versatile, refusing to be slotted into the expected and easily sorted folder. It seems Kirk Wong after opening more traditionally with The Club thought like this as evident in his horror-comedy Lifeline Express that we covered last episode. But we track back to movie number two, the special mind/genre-bender Flash Future Kung Fu from 1983 for this second installment of The Director’s Series on Kirk Wong. Joining Kenny B and Tom K-W and Sylvia Rorem of The Heroic Sisterhood – The Ladies’ Asian Action Cinema Appreciation Society to discuss what’s left of Kirk’s multi-nominated vision of the future.

Hear Kenny B and Tom K-W start with his debut in triad and Michael Chan Wai-man territory called The Club (1981) and follow with the Kent Cheng and Teddy Robin horror-comedy Lifeline Express.
