The Magnificent Butcher (1979)

MagnificentButcher

Burly Butcher, Lam Sai-Wing (Sammo Hung) is a kung fu student who gets up to mischief regularly, examples include tricking other butchers out of their pigs and apprehending (and beating) a so called thief, who had actually stolen a chess piece.

Lam Sai-Wing is a student of Wong Fei-Hung (Kwan Tak-Hing), the local kung fu master and doctor. Fei-Hung decides to leave town on business leaving the school to his three students (Sammo, Yuen Biao & Wei Pei). Soon after he leaves, Wing gets into serious trouble by being framed for the murder of a young woman.

The young woman happens to be the God daughter of Master Ko (Lee Hoi-San). Master Ko is a rival kung fu master who runs the Five Dragons Kung Fu School, his students are all masters of various kung fu styles (the students include, Lam Ching-Ying, Chung Fat and Yuen Mun). Master Ko’s son, Tai-Ho (Fung Hakk-On) is nothing like his father, he wastes his fathers money on girls and drink. The story soon unfolds that it was Tai-Ho who suffocated his God Sister and left Butcher Wing to take the blame.

Now Master Ko is hell ridden on getting revenge against Butcher Wing. Butcher Wing decides to get help from a drunken beggar (Fan Moi-Sheng), with the help of this Beggar, Butcher Wing might have a chance!

One of my all time favorite Kung Fu Flicks, Sammo Hung is a legend when it comes to Kung Fu flicks. Good examples include; Warriors Two, Prodigal Son & Iron Fisted Monk. Yuen Woo-Ping made Sammo Hung look amazing in this movie, there is great action. Yuen Biao fighting Lam Ching-Ying, great action! Sammo Hung fighting Chung Fat even better & Sammo fighting against Lee Hoi-San too, what else could you ask for.

The cast is also great many great faces, Sammo, Biao, Lam Ching-Ying, Chiang Kam (the fat boy from Snake in the Eagles Shadow), Shaw brothers regular; Wei Pei. Plus we see Fan Moi-Sheng taking over the role of the Drunken Begger, taking over from Yuen Siu-Tien (aka the father of Yuen clan; Yuen Woo-Ping & Yuen Chung-Yan etc.). Poor old Yuen Siu-Tien passed away during the making of this film.

Final thoughts, a great way to spend a evening, trust me its worth the retail price, some times even more.
