Japan On Fire 13: Mamoru Oshii – Angel’s Egg (1985)

Japan On Fire continues with anime but temporarily aborts the Studio Ghibli season for the start of the tale of Mamoru Oshii, director of Ghost In The Shell, Patlabor and Avalon. Ken and special guest Coffin Jon from VCinema talk of Oshii’s career, why he divides even fans of his work and in the second hour try and provide their interpretation of the Oshii 1985 anime Angel’s Egg. Also remember to check out our bonus episode featuring a review of the Australian Z-grade sci-fi movie In The Aftermath. It does connect to Angel’s Egg quite a bit as a matter of fact.

Japan On Fire 12: My Neighbours The Yamadas (1999)

Studio Ghibli season continues and we switch visionaries. This time Isao Takahata gets his due with a brief bio before Stoo and Ken dive deep into the sparsely animated family comedy My Neighbours The Yamadas. A movie that has not yet got its domestic abuse sequel despite being a domestic snapshot. One can dream. We had mic troubles on Stoo’s end so for a few minutes between 22.49 and 30.15 Stoo switches temporarily to his laptop mic so there’s an echoey few minutes there.

Japan On Fire 10: Studio Ghibli (Introduction)

It’s time to put forth more than just sporadic love for the animated wonders done over at Studio Ghibli but before taking on Laputa – Castle In The Sky in episode 2, Stoo and Ken do a brief history on the studio and talk of their first experiences with both anime in general but in particular with Ghibli. Follow us and Totoro above throughout this new Japan On Fire-series!

Japan On Fire 9: Voices On Kaiju – John Kreng

Fight choreographer and author John Kreng drops by in the conclusion to our Kaiju-themed Japan On Fire. A laid back chat between him and Ken covers a bit of the technical side to the action in the monster movies, John’s love for 70s grindhouse, B-movies, what makes martial acting and why not discuss a bit of RoboCop while we’re also at it.

KEN’S EDIT:Excuse my misidentification of who does the stunt in No Regret, No Return. It’s apparently Sam Wong (who fought Jackie at the beginning of Police Story III).

Japan On Fire 8: Voices On Kaiju – August Ragone

Author of  “Eiji Tsuburaya: Master of Monsters: Defending the Earth with Ultraman and Godzilla” shares with Ken the very first childhood Kaiju-exposure, how it’s corrupted him since, comparison of the Godzilla eras and basically verbally writing a love letter to the Gamera-series. Yet another. It’s deserved. Read More

Japan On Fire 7: Voices On Kaiju – Ronald L. Strong

Filmmaker/filmhistorian/trivia machine Ronald L. Strong goes over his fanatic history digging Kaiju. It’s a delightful journey as well as an aggrivating one thanks to a fair few characters taking hold of the Godzilla franchise in the 80s and onwards. Gamera still rocked though!
